Victorian Society secures listing for Norman Evill house in Stanwix Carlisle

Barn Close is an outstanding Arts and Crafts house, designed by Norman Evill in close collaboration with its original occupiers Edwin and Maud Scott-Nicholson. Edwin was an ex-architect, Maud an art-collector and gardener, both were Arts and Crafts enthusiasts. Their 1902 house was built with local materials and decorated internally by artist craftsmen - finely moulded plasterwork by G.P. Bankart, tiles by de Morgan, and much more. This has survived well, retaining much of the original layout, finishes and fittings, first as the family home until Maud's death in 1947 and then as a care home which closed last year. The house has now been listed at Grade II.
