1810 Seeds, Golf, and a Touch of Arts and Crafts: a Day in St Albans

Tuesday 15 May 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Price for single attendee: £0.00

A day organised by Jane and Michael Fookes and Geoff Brandwood exploring the Victorian and early twentieth-century buildings these places offer. The centrepiece will be the work of the talented local architect Percival Blow (1873-1939), who designed a wide range of buildings in a wide range of styles and thus did much to enhance St Albans. For this we are fortunate to be guided by his grandson, Chris Blow, himself an architect who has researched his ancestor’s work. A key patron was Samuel Ryder (1858-1936), entrepreneur, golf enthusiast (founder of the Ryder Cup) and seed merchant. Chris Blow will give an illustrated talk in Ryder’s former office (now hotel) and we will lunch in the delightful seed showroom (now Café Rouge). Walks round St Alban’s including a guided visit to the cathedral and the work of Sir Gilbert Scott and Lord Grimthorpe there. We end with an almost totally unknown work by Scott.
