2017 JF Bentley in west London

Saturday 04 July 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM

Price for single attendee: £16.00

Led by Peter Howell. The Catholic church of St Francis, Pottery Lane, Notting Hill, was built by Henry Clutton in 1859-60 but its importance is due to its having been crucial in the career of JF Bentley, who when working for Clutton was commissioned to design the altar of St John. Many further commissions encouraged him to set up on his own. The church has been recently restored and beautified by Fr Gerard Skinner. The paintings in the church were by NHJ Westlake, and we shall see the exterior of the house Bentley designed for him – his first complete building. We shall go on to St Mary of the Angels, Moorhouse Road, Bayswater (1851-2, Thomas Meyer) where. Bentley made additions and designed furnishings from 1864. Meet at the church of St Francis, Pottery Lane, Notting Hill. Tube: Holland Park. £16. Booking required.*
