An afternoon walk around The Villas of Edgerton, Huddersfield

An afternoon walk around The Villas of Edgerton with David Griffiths; Saturday 26th October, 2019

Edgerton was Huddersfield's premier Victorian suburb and almost all of its 60-plus substantial villas survive. Led by David Griffiths, author of The Villas of Edgerton (Huddersfield Civic Society, 2017), the walk will start at 2.00 pm from the (late Georgian) Ukrainian Club, 7 Edgerton Road. Huddersfield, HD1 5RA and end there for light refreshments at about 4.00 pm. The walk will be entirely on roads and most houses will be viewed from the public highway, but there will be two brief private visits, to the Tudor Gothic exterior of Lunnclough Hall and the Arts & Crafts interior of Stoneleigh, an eclectic Gothic mansion.

There is ample parking at the Ukrainian Club, which is on the A629 and easily reached from J24 of the M62. It is less than a mile from grade I listed Huddersfield Railway Station, via the varied 1850s delights of New North Road (not part of the walk). The 503 bus from the nearby bus station runs every 10 minutes - alight at the Edgerton Grove Rd stop, just after traffic lights, and walk forward. David's book will be on sale on the day (£12.95).

Anybody wanting to explore more of Huddersfield beforehand may find the town centre heritage trail of interest.

Cost: £6.

Numbers are limited so please book in advance by emailing anne.hodgson@hotmail.com. Payment to be made on the day of the walk.
